Colección Vivanco are limited-production wines which capture the essence of traditional Rioja grape varieties and the extraordinary terroirs. Each wine has been characterized by various museum pieces depicted on the labels.

Vineyards:

The grapes used in the production of this Garnacha come from 2 vineyards each covering approximately 1 hectare of land. The El Recuenco parcel is located in Tudelilla at 551 meters where the soil is sandy and rich in lime and has a planting density of 4000 vines/hectare. La Ladera de Zorraquín in Villamediana is clayey and rich in iron with a density of 3000 vines/hectare and an elevation of 443 meters above sea level. Both use the bush vine training methods and enjoy a southeastern exposure.

Technical Data:

  • Residual Sugar: 1.8 grams/liter
  • Acidity: 5.8 grams/liter
  • Dry Extract: 26.0 grams/liter

Winemaking:

In October, the grapes were hand-harvested and placed in small crates. These crates were then sent to cooling chambers for a minimum of 30 hours. Fermentation took place over 14 days in small French oak vats at 24-26°C. The grapes from each vineyard were fermented separately. Maceration periods varied based on this factor. Remaining on its lees throughout with occasional bâtonnage but without racking, the wine was aged for 18 months in new French oak barriques from different coopers, during which time malolactic fermentation occurred. The wine was bottled without fining nor filtration, then cellared an additional 6 months.

Tasting Notes:

Good varietal aromas of raspberry and other red fruit, as well as toasted, jammy, minty and herbal notes. Good acidity gives this Garnacha great freshness, despite the depth of fruit flavors. A long finish rounds it out.

Food Pairings:

Excellent with stuffed peppers, as well as hearty stews. Also pairs with many cheeses, particularly goat cheese.

Vivid ruby. High-pitched, exotic red berry liqueur and incense on the nose, with sexy rose oil and spicecake qualities adding complexity; becomes smokier with air and picks up a touch of musky herbs. Broad, slightly warm red and dark berry flavors come off as slightly loose-knit but provide serious palate coverage. Finishes with a touch [...]

The 2007 Colección Vivanco Garnacha is opaque purple with an expressive nose of cedar, leather, Asian spices, balsamic, and black cherry. Mouth-filling, balanced, and savory, it has plenty of succulent fruit and a lengthy, pure finish. It can be enjoyed over the next 6-8 years.

Powerful and raisiny on the nose, with asphalt, char and cassis. The palate is saturated and sweet, with flavors of black raisin, plum and blackberry. Staunch on the finish, with licorice and blackness. Solid, strong Garnacha. Drink now through 2012.
