Bigi was founded by Luigi Bigi in 1880 in Umbria. Today, it is one of the leading wineries in Orvieto, producing the classic white wine of the same name, as well as other high-quality wines. Originally located in a former Franciscan monastery in Orvieto called “La Trinità,” Bigi’s cellars moved to a more modern facility in Ponte Giulio in the 70s. With state-of-the-art winemaking tools and a variety of casks and barriques for aging, Bigi’s cellar combines modern techniques with tradition.
One of the most prestigious producers of Orvieto, Bigi oversees nearly 200 hectares of vineyards in the “classico” zone of the Orvieto DOC. The majority of the vines -- 70 percent -- produce white grapes, but the winery produces notable reds, as well.
Originally from Salento, Francesco Bardi studied enology in Conegliano Veneto before joining Gruppo Italiano Vini as an enologist. Known as one of Umbria's most innovative winemakers, Bardi supervises the viticulture and winemaking for all of GIV's properties in Orvieto and Lazio.
