Fattoria di Magliano

Italy

Sprawled across 90 hectares, Fattoria di Magliano is a new winery located in Magliano, a commune of the province of Grosseto within the heart of Maremma, Tuscany, only 10 miles from the Tyrrhenian coast in central Italy.

At present, 52 hectares are planted at a density of 6400 vines/ hectare using the bilateral Guyot training system. They are under the care of agronomist Valerio Barbieri, who established very strict yields from the start.

Winemaker Graziana Grassini, alongside consultant Roberto Da Valle, works in a 1500 square meter cellar to create extraordinary wines. The tasting room and bottling center are located on the top floor above ground, while the vinification and barrel-rooms are underground to maintain ideal ageing conditions.

Founded in 1997 by former shoemaker Agostino Lenci, he immediately began planting vines and building a modern winemaking facility, concentrating on producing wines of the finest quality.

The estate is also home to a boutique bed & breakfast.

Graziana Grassini

Winemaker, Fattoria di Magliano

Born and raised in Scarlino, a medieval town located along the Tuscan coast in the province of Grosseto, Graziana was told that being from the seashore and a woman, she couldn’t possibly know anything about wine. Still this never deterred her from pursuing a career with which she felt an affinity.

Her passion for work and wine is what motivates her. “To see the creation of a wine through to the end is like falling in love,” she says.

After a 10 year education in chemical sciences, it is not easy to disengage from the scientific and rely on the senses to create a wine; however, Graziana quickly realized the necessity. A wine must be created in the vineyard, the only contribution a lab can have is to perfect any minor flaws.

In high school, her focus of study was in Industrial Chemistry. She later went on to receive her diploma in Perishable Agriculture with a specialization in Viticulture and Enology. Her education continued and she went on to receive degrees in Enology and Biological Sciences. To this day she continues to take courses to keep up to date on winemaking practices.

In addition to running two labs in Tuscany authorized by the Italian Ministry of Political Agriculture for certification of wines destined for export, Graziana has been a consultant for various wineries throughout Italy.

Today the extraordinary particularities of women have brought them to the forefront of the winemaking world. Her hope is that she contributed to this change in perception.
