Il Poggio
Italy
Not far from the ancient Roman Via Emiliana, in the picturesque hillsides of Emilia-Romagna, is the winery of Umberto Cesari. Mr. Cesari is the owner of several vineyard areas: Parolino, La Casetta, Laurento, Cá Grande and Macolina, which total 53 hectares (131 acres). The Il Poggio wines are all estate grown and bottled. Ultra-modern techniques at the winery include soft pressing of the grapes, controlled fermentation, and cold bottling under a nitrogen blanket. Umberto Cesari's wines are not pasteurized. His fields are impeccable and utilize the most advanced night, drip irrigation system. Umberto Cesari produces an assortment of excellent wines. He is most noted for Albana di Romagna D.O.C.G. and Sangiovese di Romagna. His proprietary red wines, Liano and Tauleto are highly regarded throughout the world. He is considered the finest producer in the region of Emilia-Romagna and the leading expert in Albana production. His winery accounts for about 25% of all of the D.O.C.G. Albana di Romagna produced.
