Niedermayr
Italy
The Niedermayr family began producing wines in 1834, when they realized that Alto Adige was the perfect location for wine production as it provided the ideal growing conditions for certain varietals.
Located in the northern-most part of Italy, the area is mountainous with mild summers and snowy winters. To the north, it is bordered by the Austrian region of Tyrol and, until rather recently, was once a part of Austria-Hungary. Thus, it is often still referred to by its original name of Südtirol (South Tyrol) and is very heavily influenced by the Germanic cultures. It was renamed Alto Adige upon its annexation to Italy in 1919.
The matriarch of the family -- a widow with five children – began producing wines for local consumption by nearby families and businesses. In 1852, Niedermayr officially became a free-standing company. Since then, they have developed into an icon of the Alto Adige wine region producing high-quality wines that capture the terroir.
Today the company is still family-owned and operated by the fourth generation. Josef Niedermayr, and his wife Erika, oversee every detail from the vineyard to the cellar working alongside winemaker Lorenz Martini and agronomist Kurt Kager. All of the wines are produced from 35 hectares of vineyards in the province of Bolzano. Under Josef’s direction the winery underwent a complete renovation in 2003 and the new state-of-the-art facility has a capacity that exceeds one half million liters.
A combination of traditional lore and technological insight are testament to the family’s commitment to producing wines that truly reflect the best of this historic region.
