Sauska
Hungary
Hungarian-born businessman, Christian Sauska, maintained strong ties to his homeland while achieving great success in the United States. A life-long admirer of food and wine, he firmly believed in Hungary’s potential to produce unique, high-quality wines. He has spared no expense in this project, hiring acclaimed enologist and agronomist Stefano Chioccioli as a consultant to produce limited quantities of high-quality artisan wines.
Sauska Villány
Located in southwestern Hungary, the Villany estate is the newest addition to Sauska whose first vintage release was in 2006. Comprised of six plots of vineyards, a total of 150 acres are planted with both native and international varieties. The wines are handcrafted by a young winemaking team. Their goal is to produce clean and balanced wines that truly reflect the unique terroir of Hungary, of which they clearly have a profound understanding. The wines represent a harmonious marriage between innovative technology and careful manual labor.
Sauska Tokaj
Formerly known as the Citizens Casino, the historical building located in the center of Tokaj in northeastern Hungary became the home of the Sauska production facility, cellars and tasting room in 2000. Planted on 13 plots totaling 100 acres, this production area is steeped in tradition, but Sauska is continuously experimenting with the native Tokaj varieties, such as Furmint, Hárslevelű and Sárgamuskotály, as well are international grape varieties, such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The efforts have proven very successful thus far, and with constant improvements being made in the vineyard and the cellar, the future looks brilliant.
