Barranc dels Closos Negre

The vineyards are located near a gorge, or barranc in the Catalan language, in the Priorat DO of northeastern Spain. They are certified organic by the organization CCPAE. Aromas of licorice and sweet red berries fill the nose. Lush in style, this is medium- to full-bodied in style. Fermented in stainless steel then aged in previously-used French Allier barrels for 3 months. Pairs well with cream-based pasta dishes.

The fruit-driven red… started off with an acute note of strawberry before slowly showing its herbal side. [Aging]…added a little spiciness. The palate is medium-bodied, clean and balanced with some fine-grained tannins. This is to drink over the next couple of years.

New oak is the first noticeable character, but soon the ripe red fruit flavors come up, buoyed by an acid-tannin matrix that gives the wine an energetic structure and predicts years of bottle development ahead.

Compact and firm, this forms a complex matrix of red and black fruit, spice and floral notes. A wine for fideuà.

The 2010 Barranc dels Closos red is a blend of 80% Garnacha and 20% Carinena aged in Allier oak for three months. Here, there is a touch of reduction on the nose but it soon blows away. It is a little rustic with scents of mulberry, plum and a touch of shoe polish. The palate is medium-bodied with chunky red fruit mingling with dark chocolate and cloves. The finish is a little dry and severe, but it has a natural, bucolic charm. Drink now-2016.

Dark ruby. Musky aromas and flavors of ripe dark berries, cherry and mocha, with licorice and mineral overtones. Sappy and smooth in texture, with sneaky tannins adding grip to a long, sweet, vanilla-accented finish. This wine should drink well on the young side, say in the next few years.

Mas Igneus’ 2008 Barranc dels Closos Negre is made up of 80% Garnatxa Negre and 20% Carinena aged in seasoned French oak for 3 months. Creme de cassis, black cherry, mineral, and violets inform the nose of this smooth-textured, forward effort. Savory, ripe, and flavorful, it is a good value for drinking over the next 6 years.

Deep ruby. Blackcurrant, candied plum, violet and licorice on the nose and palate. Supple, round and sweet in the mouth; a velvety but focused and elegant wine, with a late note of candied flowers. An earthy licorice note lingers on the sweet, nicely persistent finish.

Purple-colored, it offers up an expressive perfume of earth, slate, espresso, black cherry, blueberry, and licorice. This leads to a full-bodied wine with intense liquid mineral and black fruit flavors, outstanding depth, and enough ripe tannin to support an additional 2-3 years of cellaring. It should be at its finest from 2011 to 2021. It is a good introduction to the DO of Priorat.
