Colección Maturana Tinta
The Colección wines from Dinastia Vivanco are limited-production wines that capture the essence of traditional Rioja grape varieties and their cultivation in extraordinary terroirs. The personality of each wine is distinguished on the label by an original piece of art from the family’s collection on display at the museum.
This native and exclusive varietal of Rioja is characterized by black fruit and spice, particularly peppercorns and cloves, and undertones of earth and minerals. It shows balsamic flavors on the long, vibrant finish. Vinified in French oak vats, the wine was transferred to new and second use French oak barrels to age for 14 months on the lees.

Bright purple. Sexy, oak-spiced cherry-vanilla and dark berry scents pick up a hint of potpourri with aeration. Deep, sweet and seamless on the palate, offering juicy blackberry and cherry compote flavors and a strong suggestion of spicecake. The vanilla and spice notes come back on a very long, sweet, seamless finish that’s framed by supple tannins.

This polished red shows focus and depth. The black cherry and blackberry flavors are fresh and juicy, while toast, spice and licorice notes add interest. Light tannins and firm acidity impart structure, but this stays graceful through the berry-accented finish. Drink now through 2022.

One of the very few single varietals produced of this indigenous grape and it is a good one. it offers a complex nose of dark plum, roasted meat and smoke. Rich and sweet, revealing a hint of balsamic, liqueur-like richness and ripe meaty dark red fruit flavors. It shows good acidity and finishes with firm tannins.

More floral… The palate reveals supple tannins and good acidity.

The 2010 Coleccion Vivanco Parcelas de Maturana, which is, according to the latest news, a distant cousin of the Cabernet family, has an intense herbaceous note in the nose that I often find in Maturana. The wine is very dark, opaque, almost black, and very aromatic, with notes of violets, dark fruit and that herbaceous note that gives it an Atlantic profile. The palate is intense, dense but fresh, with supple tannins with low(ish) acidity, but manages to keep the freshness, velvety texture and great length. Very good, but impossible to pin down as Rioja. Drink 2014-2019.

Smoky and toasty notes lead the way in this polished red, giving way to a deep core of plum and blackberry fruit, supported by firm, well-integrated tannins. Quite dense, with enough acidity to stay lively through the spicy finish. Best from 2015 through 2025.
