Ruca Malen Kinien de Don Raúl

From the Mapuche language meaning “unique,” Kinien is the icon line of wines from Ruca Malen produced from 100% Estate-grown fruit in limited quantities. Kinien de Don Raúl was named in honor of Argentinean wine visionary, Raúl de la Mota, who produced the first vintage of this wine in 2005. Don Raúl is a blend of the finest barrel selections produced in only the best vintages in limited quantities. It is elegant and rich with intense aromas of blackberries and plums, followed by sweet baking spices, toasted vanilla, and caramel notes. Full in body, and well-balanced, this age-worthy wine is supported by round tannins through the extended, smooth finish. The final blend is aged in new 90% French and 10% American oak barrels for 18 months.


2014 - 91 pts

Dark and savory with mature plums and blueberries, this has a pretty massive body, but time has mellowed the generous tannins nicely and there’s still enough life for this to be good with a big steak or roast game.

All it takes is one sniff to know that this is in fine shape, because the mix of woodsy spice, toast and dark fruit aromas is ideal. Its lush palate is full but balanced, with black fruit and chocolate flavors that end with mild oak. Tough but yielding tannins ensure that this will last for another 10 years or more.

The nose comes through as dominated by oak aromas, spices, smoke and cured meat, and it’s not easy to reach the core of ripe black fruit that is more noticeable in the palate, though the sweet spices and charred oak flavors take the lead there too. It’s a powerful, well-oaked, international-style red blend that will need a good couple of years to try to integrate all that oak.

Balsamic, dark-berry aromas come with notes of crushed minerals, coconut, oak and chocolate. Tight, focused and elegant. Spicy, cedary flavors of tobacco and baked black fruits finish long, with lasting touches of tobacco and fig. Drink through 2020.

Full ruby-red.  Blackberry, mocha, molasses and truffle on the nose.  Plush, pliant and broad, with expressive, almost roasted flavors of blackberry, currant and smoky oak.  Has the stuffing to support its serious, even tannins.  Finishes rich and long.  This big boy relies more on its tannins than on its acidity for balance.

This blend of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot is powerful, with a blueberry flavor, a mild green note, a balsamic hint and a molasses tinge. It’s saturated and clampy in feel, with aggressive flavors of lemony oak, balsamic fruit and baked berry. Warm, oaky and full of licorice flavor on the finish. Drink 2014-2019.

The 2007 Kinien de Don Raul is a blend of 60% Malbec and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. It spent 18 months in new French (90%) and American (19%) oak. Purple in color, it has a slightly roasted bouquet of scorched earth, truffle, leather, black cherry, and blackberry. Full-bodied with a brawny personality, this large-scaled effort has densely packed fruit and loads of ripe tannin. It will require 5-7 years of cellaring and should have a drinking window extending from 2015 to 2024. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it exhibits an attractive perfume of toasty oak, graphite, Asian spices, black cherry, and blackberry. Densely packed and structured on the palate, it reveals ample spicy black fruit flavors along with hints of mocha and chocolate. Give it another 3-5 years of cellaring and drink it through 2027.
