San Pietro Barolo Riserva DOCG

The finest fruit is cultivated from the estate-owned San Pietro vineyard to produce this limited-production Barolo Riserva exclusively in five-star vintages.  Layered with aromas of ripened fruit, spices, and minerals, subtle balsamic nuances appear on the finish of this bold red.  Aged in tini for 46 months, the wine is transferred into stainless steel tanks for an additional 3 months to stabilize before bottling.  It is cellared for 12 months prior to release.  San Pietro Barolo Riserva will reward extensive cellaring upwards of 12 years.

Iron, raw meat with a fine mineral quality to the red cherries and cranberries. Really juicy and bright on the palate with powerful yet fine, chalky tannins and a layered finish. Pure and transparent in soul with fine Barolo structure and austerity.

The 2016 Barolo Riserva San Pietro opens to a medium saturation with dark ruby and garnet. This Nebbiolo from the village of Barolo offers some balsam notes that are rounded off in this case by dry tobacco and pressed roses. The tannins are dry, but the wine maintains pretty silkiness throughout.

Drawing its fruit from the village of Barolo, the 2015 Barolo Riserva San Pietro shows a darker garnet color and has already lost some of the shiny gloss that you see in young Nebbiolo. Sporting a more austere and sultry personality, the wine opens to delicate fruit tones of cassis and dried plum. There are background notes of spice, tar and tilled earth as well. This is a steady and complete package with tannins that are for the most part integrated, or likewise headed toward integration.”

Aromas of ripe, gamy cherry, mushroom and leather are augmented by iron, leafy underbrush and wild thyme notes. This finishes on the dry side, yet stays long and austere. Fine complexity. Best from 2021 through 2035.

Shows a slightly raisiny character with cedar and coffee. Dried fruit cake, too. Yet, the palate is dense and fresh at the same time. A little overdone. However, I like it. Drink now.

The San Pietro cru delivers dark, structured fruit with an immediate or accessible approach. This is especially true with the 2011 Barolo Riserva San Pietro that was born in a very warm growing season. The bouquet is redolent of ripe fruit, plum, blackberry and cassis. That ripe primary fruit is enhanced by savory tones of spice and grilled herb. The tannins are well integrated and velvety in texture. Bottle production is 3,075 units strong, with 127 magnums.

A rich, meaty style, boasting cherry, plum, tobacco and underbrush flavors. Well-Structured yet harmonious, with a long finish of autumn woods and tobacco.

Balsamic aromas of menthol and eucalyptus unfold in the glass and mingle with scents of leather, licorice and dark berry. The concentrated palate delivers dried black cherry, crushed raspberry, black pepper and grilled herb alongside velvety tannins. Drink 2015-2022.

Viberti has produced three Riservas from the 2006 vintage. The 2006 Barolo Riserva San Pietro shows cured meat and smoked bacon with background notes of dried fruit and prune. The tannins have developed that squeaky, polished quality they get with time. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2020.

This is beautiful with bright aromas of wild berry, dried raspberry, citrus zest, ginger and cherry cola. A smoky touch of tobacco or toasted nut is nicely integrated within the smooth and silky texture. Hold for 10-20 years.

Eucalyptus, menthol, tar and licorice flavors overshadow the cherry and raspberry fruit in this focused, sinewy Barolo, which is balanced, with its flavors going on and on in layers. Best from 2015 through 2030.

2003

Wine Enthusiast - 90 pts

Barolo Riserva San Pietro reflects the heat of the 2003 vintage with confidence and personality. There’s a good balance between fruit and spice here and mature cherry aromas help elevate the whole thing up a few notches in intensity. The wine is compact and clean with firm, drying tannins.

Firmly tannic, this red is rich and boasts bilberry, raspberry and menthol notes. Needs air and shows good length, if not much complexity. Best from 2013 through 2022.
